After the founding of New China, the State Council of the Central People's Government designated May 1 as a statutory Labor Day in December 1949, with a national holiday. Every year on this day, the whole country celebrates, people change into festive dress, cheerfully gather in parks, theaters, squares, participate in various celebration meetings or entertainment, and commend the outstanding contributions of the workers.

On September 18, 1999, the State Council of China promulgated the Decision of the State Council on Revising the Measures for National Annual and Memorial Day Holidays. For the first time, the Measures for National Annual and Memorial Day Holidays promulgated by the State Council of China on December 23, 1949 were revised, which included the annual Spring Festival, May Day and the statutory festivals of the National Day with vacations. The country has been on holiday for 7 days, forming 3 "golden weeks".

On December 14, 2007, the State Council for the second time revised the "National Year's Day and Memorial Day Holiday Measures" to adjust the starting time of the Spring Festival holiday from the first day of the first lunar month to New Year's Eve; the "May Day" from seven days to three days, reducing by four days; and the Qingming, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival were added as statutory holidays, each with three days off. May 1 Golden Week will also become history. Since 2008, the May 1 Golden Week has changed to the May 1, 3 day long holiday.

According to the Decision of the State Council on Amending the Measures for Holidays on National Annual and Commemorative Days, the International Labor Day on May 1st-3rd, 2008, is a three-day holiday. Among them, May 1 is a statutory holiday, May 3 (Saturday) is a public holiday, May 4 (Sunday) is changed to May 2 (Friday), May 4 (Sunday) to work.

Among them, May 1 (Friday) is a statutory holiday, May 2 (Saturday), May 3 (Sunday) is a public holiday, May 4 (Monday) to work.
